First ever university in FATA to be opened for students on 24th October

The opening ceremony of the first ever university for the students of Federal Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) will be held at Darra Ademkhel on 24th October this year.

Assistant Director Planning and Development, Liaquat Khan declared that the donation has been made to the government to build a separate institute for the students of the tribal areas. He stated:

“Initially the university will start its classes along with its administration at recently renovated building of Government Degree College Akhurwal in Darra Ademkhel”

In addition with 266 kanals to build strong and proper buildings, 200 more kanals of land has been purchased. Furthermore, Liaquat Khan added that the FATA University will be completed in almost 5 years.

The classes will commence on the opening day i.e. from 24th October. Daily times reported that Liaquat Khan discussed the programs that were open for admission. 4 years program of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor of Science along with BS in different programs will be available to apply for.

Additionally, he said that Tahir Shah has been hired as the Vice Chancellor (VC) by the Search Committee. Tahir Shah is a retired professor from National Center of Excellence Geology Department, University of Peshawar.

The contribution of Pakistan People Party (PPP)

The former President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari also contributed his time and efforts in the establishment of the FATA University. According to the report, he stretched the Higher Education Commission (HEC) decree to FATA.

Moreover, he also set up a search committee to appoint the VC and other staff but the project could not be implemented.

According to the FATA University’s papers, PPP contributed 4.70 million for the first phase of the university. Liaquat Khan said that the operating college was destroyed in a bomb blast. This was the property of FATA University so they reconstructed and modified the building under the supervision of Governor KPK Iqbal Zafar Jhagra.

Tahir Shah also added that the rules in the statues of the university 2013, it will allow everyone across the country to apply for admission here. While speaking about the funds, he said:

“At the moment there is no shortage of funds. However, we need more land. The university has around 466 kanals of land and wants to buy around 200 kanals more. Work on master plan would be completed by December this year”

The FATA secretariat department reported to construct more building to hold more students in the university. In order to turn this college into a full functioning university more funds and kanals of land are needed.
