On 6th January 2017, International Data group (IDG) unveiled the Global Top Brands 2016-17 at an award ceremony in Las Vegas. Samsung was officially revealed as the leading Smart Connected Devices Brand as well as the Smartphone Brand in 2016-17. The list was disclosed by the Managing Director of IDG Ventures USA, Patrick Kenealy.
While addressing the audience at the 50th International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Mr. Patrick stated:
“The global smartphone market is basically captured by Apple, Samsung and a number of Chinese brands. We can see that with the trend of intellectualization, smart connected devices manufacturers headed by Chinese brands are constantly accelerating transformation and upgrading and striving for innovation”
Commenting on the achievement, Samsung Group stated:
“Despite the fact that Samsung develops virtual reality and produces screens and processors for VR headsets based on its hardware manufacturing background, Chinese manufacturers offering low prices might pose a threat to it in price in a year or two… Samsung is trying to provide the best user experience for customers, based on which it will make necessary improvements and innovations”
Honors for Apple, Huawei and Coolpad
Apple managed to secure 2nd position at the event in both Smart Connected Devices Brand and Smartphone Brand. It was followed by some of the Chinese smartphone brands like Lenovo, Xiaomi, Huawei, Coolpad, ZTE etc.

As far as the individual category of ‘Best Overall Performing Smartphone of 2016’ award was concerned, it was presented to Cool Changer S1. Coolpad Group said:
“The explosive development of mobile Internet and intelligent technology in recent years has created an unprecedented opportunity for Coolpad. Last year, it took us a whole year for strategic transformation. From product R&D to top-quality products, as well as more emphasis placed on brand influence. In the future, Coolpad will be more dedicated and professional to strive for excellence. Moreover, it will provide products with more elegant appearance and better performance”
After appearing in the list of top 15 brands, Huawei Technologies Co Ltd commented:
“We are happy that Huawei has been included into the list…It indicates that the smart & connected industry and users have recognized Huawei’s efforts over the years. Now Huawei Mate 9 and other flagship phones of Huawei with a series of new technologies like Leica dual camera, top-notch security solutions, and EMUI 5.0 OS can provide a more intuitive user experience”
