Google’s modular android phone to be launched in 2017

Google’s modular android phone is going to be launched to consumers in 2017. Surely, your life is going to be easier since you won’t be required to purchase smartphone every other year.

Project Ara is a smartphone that can be customized by swapping out individual pieces, such as the battery and the camera. The frame contains all the functionality of a smartphone along with six flexible slots for easy swapping. Google displayed the latest version during a Google I/O panel on Friday.

The modular android phone will have the unique feature of allowing developers to design their own hardware parts rather than creating apps for a phone. A developer type of the smartphone will be available in couple of months.

Project Ara frame is built with durable handles and connectors to keep modules secured. Ara modules are designed around standards, allowing them to work with new generations of frames and new form factors. An Ara device could be used for 5 to 6 years.

Ara modules fit greatly into the frame, allowing for upgrades, innovation and style. The objective is to design a highly customizable and versatile device since the need of every individual varies. Instead of purchasing a new phone every year, this smartphone can be upgraded one piece at a time.

For instance, you could add a fitness tracker, high quality microphones or speakers, different kinds of cameras, a new battery, health tools or a finger print censor.

At present, Google is in collaboration with companies like Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, iHealth and E Ink on custom modules.

Background of the phone

Project Ara is the brainchild of Google’s Advanced Technology and Products (ATAP) group. The idea was first executed in 2014 where the company stated that the phone would be available in 2015. However, since then Google became a subsidiary of Alphabet, ATAP head Regina Dugan defected to Facebook, and Rick Osterloh was hired to lead Google’s hardware unit.

The modular android phone is now graduating ATAP to become its own business unit within Google.
