Punjab government set to introduce hassle-free vehicle registration system

Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit (SMU) senior member (law and order) Salman Sufi has said that the new system for the registration of vehicles is set to be introduced in Punjab next month. He made this statement while addressing a gathering at Rawalpindi Gymkhana.

One of the primary reasons of new Dealer Vehicle Registration System (DVRS) will be to prohibit applied-for and bogus number plates. It will also modernize the complete process of registration and number-plates of the vehicles.

Salman Sufi said that the new DVRS will help in eradicating corruption and usage of vehicles with fake number plates in acts of terrorism as complete data of a vehicle will be saved and computerized under the new system. He further added:

“DVRS will also help eliminate the tendency of late registration of vehicle and evasion of motor vehicle tax”

Salman Sufi also said that about 1.6 million motorcycles and vehicles were registered across Punjab last year where the applicants had to bear the torture of standing in long lines for an extensive period of time to pay more unofficially to the agents.

Senior member of SMU Salman Sufi also said that under the DVRS, number plates of vehicles and motorcycles would be provided by the dealers who would deposit number plate and registration fee in National Bank of Pakistan themselves and would maintain record of vehicles by computerizing themselves. Later the approved number plates would be provided to the owners of the vehicles and motorcycles. He stated that:

“These dealers would be given dealership/licenses for provision of number plates to vehicle owners. Under this programme, Punjab government would register dealers who would be allowed to sale and purchase vehicles”

DVRS to strengthen registration process

Director Excise and Taxation Tanveer Gondal, who also attended the meeting, stated that the new DVRS system will only strengthen the registration system of the vehicle. The dealer would charge Rs. 2000/- and Rs. 500/- for a vehicle and motorcycle respectively as a fee from the customer as fixed by the government and would provide services for issuance of number plate.

The director further specified that the universal number plate and registration of vehicle would also be provided in the form of computerized card under the new DVRS. The card will consist of all the information related to the sale and purchase of the vehicles.

Moreover, the director also made sure that under the new system, complications pertaining to number plates and registration of the vehicles would be completely eliminated and the citizens would be able take a sigh of relief. He also said that benign process of sale and purchase of the vehicles would be established in Punjab without any corruption.
