Galaxy S8

Being one of the biggest product safety failures in the history of technology, Samsung has now managed to put it behind by announcing the release of the Galaxy S8 in the first half of this year.

Samsung hasn’t provided details about the cause of the explosion of the Note 7 or how will it prevent such issues in the future as this might prove to be critical for the company, as said by analysts and investors. The official results of the investigation will likely be announced on January 23rd, a day before the company announces detailed fourth-quarter earnings results.

Bryan Ma, a Singapore-based analyst for the IDC said:

“They’ve got to make sure they come clean and they’ve got to reassure buyers as to why this won’t happen again”

Details about the cause of explanation are likely to be announced on the 23rd of January. This was revealed by an anonymous person as he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue. A day before January 23, the company will also announce its detailed fourth-quarter earnings results. The head of Samsung’s mobile business, Koh Dong-jin will announce these results and will also brief the public about the safety measures the company will take in the future to avoid such cases from happening again.

More than 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7s were recollected in September as Samsung disclosed that the cause of the fire was due to a manufacturing fault from one of its suppliers. The suppliers were later revealed to be Samsung SDI Co Ltd.

Effect on Samsung’s business

Even though the phones were recollected, new phones, manufactured by different suppliers started to explode and that was the time when Samsung had to take the big step and completely stop the sales of the phone. This resulted in a great loss for the company as it dealt with a $5.2 billion blow to its profit over three-quarters.

Bryan Ma stated:

“To me, it’d be surprising if they said it was a supplier issue”

Sharing his opinion, he said that maybe the battery exploded because there wasn’t enough room for the battery inside the phone.

Samsung has decided to further investigate the cause of the issue by the detailed examination of the phone’s hardware and software. In addition, it will also hire other companies to help in the ongoing investigation.

Sources revealed that until now, Samsung has been successful in catching fire on its phones but hasn’t been able to identify it as a software or hardware design issue.

Due to the fault in its previous phone, Samsung’s business sees a shaky predicament this year. However, as the prices for memory chips and light-emitting diode screens for smartphones has increased, Samsung might also see an upsurge in its sales this year besides the downfall due to the Galaxy Note 7.
