Taking the leap: Should you work for yourself?

Got big ideas about going it alone? In today’s climate, it wouldn’t be surprising. We’ve never had more tools to hand for forming a well-rounded independent start-up, be it a digital or a bricks-and-mortar affair. But going it alone isn’t all about the ideas and how to realize them – there’s a lot of aspects that rely more on your skills and disposition than the power your desktop and smart phone punch. In short, if you’re considering going it alone, the first thing you need to consider is yourself.

Running a business, or even freelancing, requires not just self-motivation, but self-discipline. Good intentions mean nothing without a solid plan, and the ability to keep to it, so if you’re someone who needs an externally-enforced schedule and deadlines to thrive, you might want to think twice about quitting your day job.

On the other hand, if you’re brimming with imagination and you have a knack of picking up new skills and disciplines as you need them, why not try going freelance parallel to your regular employment until you figure out if it’s the life for you? To help you along the way, check out the flowchart below by The Business Backer for guidance on which path to choose – and how to prevail once you make that decision.
