In a recent collaboration between the governments of Japan and Pakistan, face recognition systems will be installed at all the airports of Pakistan after Japan approved a grant aid of 200 million Japanese Yen which is equivalent to Pakistan’s 205 million.
An official agreement was signed between the two countries on Monday. Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan, Takashi Kurai and Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Division (EAD) Secretary, Tariq Bajwa were the two representatives at the time of contract formation.
The government of Japan agreed to extend a grant aid of Rs. 205 million for the socio-economic development programme to install face recognition systems at all the airports in the country to better and improve security measures in Pakistan. Japanese Ambassador hoped that this move will strengthen the relationship between two countries.
Pakistan’s (EAD) Secretary, Tariq Bajwa, said that the system will only help to improve the security of the passengers and all airport staff. He stated that:
“Security enhancement is indispensable for successful socio-economic development in Pakistan. This Japanese advanced system would serve the crime deterrent at the airport and would improve the security of passengers and people working at the airport”
The face recognition system is a computer application capable of detecting or verifying an individual from a digital image of the human face captured on video. The system is being used for mass identification. There is no need for any physical interaction with the individual such as fingerprints to help and carry forward the process of identification.
The primary objective of this initiative is to strengthen the security conditions of developing countries under the ‘Economic and Social Development Program.’ Japanese government is always there to assist countries that require their advanced technologies.
The X-ray scanning devices have already been installed at 3 major international airports. The installations at Karachi and Bin Qasim International Ports are also underway. Moreover, Japan has also contributed 123 Japanese Hybrid Vehicles to the Ministry of Interior and National Highway Police for patrolling last year.
