98% students flunk in CSS exam in 2016

Central Superior Services (CSS) of Pakistan is easily the toughest exam to pass in the country. This exam is conducted on yearly basis to enter into the bureaucracy of Pakistan. In a shattering blow, only 2% of the students managed to clear the CSS exam this year. Subsequently, whopping 98% flunk to register the 2nd worst CSS result in the history of Pakistan.

Shocking numbers

The result of CSS exam has left the students of the country in despair. As many as 21,000 students applied for the exam while 9,700 appeared in the exam. Shockingly, only 202 applicants managed to clear the written stage of the exam. That is only the first phase that a small chunk of students have passed and now their fate is largely reliant on the interview.

The examination result of CSS in 2016 is the 2nd worst CSS result with 2.09%. In 2013, the passing percentage was 2.08% of the candidates who were able to secure over 50% marks in all the subjects. It is fair to say that the difficulty level of CSS exam has advanced from ‘hard’ to ‘expert’.

The students were of the view that Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) recently introduced the alteration in the subject groupings. As a result, FPSC inducted a handful of new subjects among which applicants had to choose one. Astonishingly, 75% of the students couldn’t clear the new subject they chose while clearing all the subjects. Students believe that a strict subject selection criterion is one of the reasons why 98% managed to fail the exam.

Every year, students appear in CSS exam by studying day in and day out. However, 90% of the students fail to reach their goal. Every year, roughly 400 candidates are expected to clear the exam out of which 150-200 are allocated on the basis of their domiciles.

Possible reasons of failure

Some of the key reasons of student’s failure in CSS exam are listed below:

1- Lack of concentration
2- Creativity is discouraged
3- Lack of concept-based education
4- Incomplete preparation
5- No proper guidance

In 2009, 15.85% students managed to clear CSS exam. However, in 2016, only a handful of students cleared the exam. With each passing year, the graph of passing students is going downward.
