EPI rankings: Pakistan is ranked 48th in terms of English skills globally

As per the Education First’s (EF) English Proficiency Index (EPI), Pakistan is ranked 48th out of 72 countries.

We all know that English is the international language. Even though many nations, such as China, are trying to promote their own language instead of English, it has not faded the status of English language internationally. Due to its global reach, English is considered as a language that can be used almost anywhere in the world. It is used as a go-to language by foreigners when they visit different countries.

Even though English in Pakistan is taught from the 1st grade or even earlier, it has failed to respond equally. According to the study, Pakistan’s EF EPI score was 48.78. On average, Pakistan is ranked 13th out of 19 Asian countries.

The main factor behind Pakistan’s poor performance is its poor governance. It has been unable to improve the quality of education in Pakistan.

Recently, State Bank of Pakistan issued a staff note for quality and effectiveness of public spending on education in Pakistan. It reported the government’s failure to invest and improve the quality of education in Pakistan.

According to a recent survey, Pakistan was rated among the worst 10 countries to provide internet freedom. This was also a vital standard for the EPI.

The EF Standard English Test (EFSET)

EF conducted an online test to measure the English aptitude of 72 countries. The main focus of the test was to evaluate the non-native countries with the highest rank in this test.

During the year 2015, 950,000 people from 72 countries attempted the EF Standard English Test (EFSET).

Countries with good access of internet and education system performed much better than others. According to the study, Netherland, Denmark and Sweden made it to the top 3 whereas countries like Iraq ended up at the bottom of the list.

The study consisted of 2 parts:

1. To evaluate the relation between English and various socio-economic factors.
2. To test the aptitude across 5 continents: Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

No matter how well the study is conducted, there is always room for improvement. The study consists of MCQs which tests the reading and learning skills.

There is no spoken or written test that would provide a much better evaluative result as to which nation is better than the other in the EPI.
