Handsets and Telecom Imports Reach $1.23 Billion in Pakistan

Telecom imports in Pakistan are surging at fiery rates, thanks to the ever-spiraling user-base and growing potential of the local markets. According to a new report, Pakistan imported cellular handsets worth of $544 million and telecom related equipment imports touched $ 682 million, making it a 20.7% and 30.3% imports rise respectively. The stats are from the fiscal year 2014, which means that said areas of the Pakistani imports will burgeon more rapidly afterwards, thanks to the launch of 4G and 3G services.

The handsets and telecom equipment imports are subject to the demand of the local markets. After telecom companies like Warid, Ufone, Telenor and Zong launched 4G and 3G services, the demand of handsets supportive of these technologies hiked massively.

The report also claims that overall, the telecom imports in Pakistan brushed $1.23 billion, 44% of which were related to consumer products like handsets and accessories.

Apart from depicting the potential of the local telecom sector, this report also directs us towards the key aspect of growth for the future: the need of local manufacturing. The government seems to be ignorant of the colossal depth of telecom market, which can be easily used to make it a million dollar industry in Pakistan. This would create jobs, opportunities and imbibe foreign investments in Pakistan.

Perhaps it’s about time when the Pakistani authorities lodge a formal request to the international tech giants like Apple for an official launch of their products in the local Pakistani market, which is booming.
