Chinese hacker held by FIA from Karachi for skimming bank ATM

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrests one young Chinese National and is currently on the hunt for another. Both of them were involved in skimming the ATM of bank in the outskirt of Karachi.

After noticing suspicious and unusual delayed activities inside the ATM of the bank, the management contacted the FIA to get their assistance and bringing the issue in their prior notice. In the CCTV footage, two individuals at the bank’s Plaza Square branch in Karachi were involved in stealing data from an ATM machine.

The bank reported FIA that two individuals, who were apparently looking foreigners in the CCTV footage, spent an unnecessarily long time at the ATM without any outward physical activity. The complaint was registered on 20th June with FIA. According to the report:

“On June 21, the bank management with its technical staff visited the same ATM facility and at the same time informed the cybercrime cell of the FIA for assistance and cooperation in case of an offense committed there. The CCTV footage showed the foreigner placing certain devices around the ATM which further raised eyebrows”

When the bank officials visited the ATM, they discovered two skimming devices from the spot. For your information, a skimming device is a method which is used by hackers to capture data from the magnetic stripe on the back of an ATM card.

The first device was placed on the card slot while the other one was positioned over ATM’s keypad machine. Through these devices, one can gather sensitive and key information about the customers. It also allows the hackers to attain the pin code and the card number and unfortunately the customer cannot know about it.

The FIA recovered the devices and for further investigation about the case, they got hold of the CCTV footage too. Luckily for FIA and the bank, one of the hackers visited the bank ATM after an hour to secure the information of customers from skimming device. However, FIA was quick and they hurriedly detained the criminal. Later it was discovered after the investigation that the foreigner was a Chinese national. His name is Xie Yi and he came to Pakistan on 18th June along with his companion, Xie Rongjing.

According to a report:

“The FIA team visited that place as well and searched the room the suspect was staying in. The search led to the recovery of some electronic equipment, two skimming devices, each having a 16GB memory card, Chinese passports and identity cards of the suspects and different cards of Chinese banks”

When Xie Yi was interrogated, he confessed that he did not know about the hacking attempts and he denied all the charges by stating that he was following the commands of his companion, Xie Rongjing. FIA has tried to get hold of another Chinese suspect but so far there hasn’t been much success. A case has been lodged against the escaped criminal. FIA is also in contact with Chinese officials and diplomats to trace Xie Rongjing.
