4 Pakistani students win bronze medals at International Science Olympiads

It doesn’t bother the youth of Pakistan if the country is unable to win medals at Rio Olympics since they are securing medals after medals for Pakistan in education sector at the international stage. While representing the country in various International Science Olympiads, 4 Pakistani students won bronze medals and one honorable mention.

The competition was held in various countries across the world including Georgia, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Vietnam.

A different team of students got selected under Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program. Teams participated in 27th International Biology Olympiad, 47th International Physics Olympiad, 48th International Chemistry Olympiad and 57th International Mathematics Olympiad.

STEM career program is a joint venture of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). The program is specifically designed for the aspiring youth of Pakistan who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

27th olympiad

1- 27th International Biology Olympiad (IBO)

The 27th IBO was held from 17th to 24th July 2016 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Out of 4 Pakistani students who participated in the event, 3 of them managed to win bronze medals. They were Muhammed Alamgir Khan from Cadet College Hassan Abdal, Bakhtawar Ahmed from Hamza Army Public School and College, Rawalpindi and Saffa Fatima from Lahore Grammar School.

2- 47th International Physics Olympiad (IPO)

The 47th IPO took place in Zurich, Switzerland from 10th to 17th July 2016. Among five students who participated in this event, Maimoon Siddiqui from Karachi Grammar School won an honorable mention for Pakistan.

3- 48th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)

The 48th IChO was hosted by Georgia from 23rd July to 1st August 2016. Muhammed Ismail from FFC Grammar School, Mirpur Mathelo, Sindh won bronze medal for the country.

4- 57th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO)

The 57th IMO was held in Hong Kong from 6th to 16th July 2016. Six Pakistani students participated in IMO but none of them was able to secure a medal or mention for Pakistan.

Pakistan students were rigorously trained and coached by the local team leaders from several institutes for the competition. Institutions like National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad; HEJ Research Institute, Karachi; COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Lahore; PIEAS, Islamabad and members of the STEM Careers Program at HEC played a vital role in the achievements of the students.

About International Science Olympiads

International Science Olympiads takes place every year. The notion of this competition is to provide pre-university science students an opportunity to compete in solving challenging theoretical and experimental science problems. The championship is open for students from all over the world.
