There were days when you could pass unnoticed while abusing traffic rules or bribe the traffic police to get away with your misconduct. The fairy days are going to disappear as the traffic police in Lahore is being replaced by CCTV cameras to keep track of traffic violations. In this way, automatic challan will be generated and delivered to your house if you are found violating traffic rules.
The city of Lahore is highly populated. Maintaining a regular check and balance of the traffic law is almost impossible for the traffic police. The idea of e-ticketing came to life when the heavy traffic and noise made it very difficult for a traffic police officer to maintain control over the traffic.
The initial work on the project was started a few months ago. However, it was in the pending phase as it required Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif’s approval. Finally, the notion is given the thumbs up from official authorities and we can hope to see it in real life in the following couple of months.
System overview
The first batch of CCTV cameras will be installed at traffic junctions. These cameras will monitor any irregular behavior by drivers including wrong U-turns, signal breaking or over speeding which often leads to gruesome accidents.
These violations of the traffic law will be examined by higher authorities and only after their approval; an e-ticket will be generated. Subsequently, it will then be delivered to the person responsible for breaking the traffic law via courier service.
In addition to the e-ticket, the photo of the incident and also of the number plate will be attached to the ticket which will act as a witness of the committed crime. In this way, the culprit won’t have any questions regarding his involvement in the accident.
The maximum number of days to deposit the challan will be 15 days. Failing to do so will result in the renewal of the challan with additional charges. This new challan will also be posted to the culprit’s house.
This set-up will basically infuse a solid and a steady era of income for the Punjab government. Traffic police officers regularly settle for their personal gain instead of taking after the law. These challans are never considered important, which harms the income stream for the government.
