A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Your NTN [Updated 2023]

Tax is a hotly disputed topic in the country. Nevertheless, countries run on taxes and apart from following the law, it is good citizenship to pay taxes for the benefit of the nation. Every salaried person and business person is liable to pay income tax, sales tax and property tax in Pakistan. However, to do that, one must register himself with Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). We’ve done the legwork to get you started and prepare a detailed guide on how to get your National Tax Number (NTN).

Getting your NTN

– Visit FBR IRIS portal

– Click on ‘Registration for Unregistered Person’ box which is highlighted in green

– Fill in the form with all the accurate and relevant information including your name, number, CNIC, address, email address

– Once all information is entered, click on ‘submit’. Thereafter, you will receive a 6-digit code on both your contact number and email address

– Enter the codes against the boxes and click on ‘submit’. Your account will be created and you will receive a password and pin code from FBR via SMS or email. A person can then login via USER ID and password

– After logging in and landing on the main IRIS page, tap on ‘draft’. Soon, you will get to see 181 application form

– Now you will need to click on ‘edit’ so that you can see 6 different tabs: personal tab, business tab, property tab, link tab, attachment and bank account tab

– Fill out the registration form with all the required information [should be correct]. If you are working in a company, you need to add employer’s NTN in the link tab. Click on ‘submit’ to complete the registration process and attach the following documents too!

Documents required for NTN (Salaried people)

  • Valid CNIC copy
  • Copy of recently [not older than 3 months] paid electricity bill
  • Payslip copy
  • Contact information including landline, mobile and email address
  • NTN of employer, office address and official email address

Documents required for NTN (Business)

  • Valid CNIC copy
  • Business letterhead and it should be blank
  • Copy of recently paid electricity bill of business location
  • Property or rental contract [should be printed on Rs200 Stamp]
  • Nature of the business
  • Contact information including landline, mobile and email address
