History of Gwadar Port

Gwadar port is positioned on the Arabian Sea and it has been part of many arguments in the past. The port was acknowledged in 1954 and its first ever dock was built in 1992. Its construction was delayed because the port was under Oman for 200 years. On 8th September 1958, Pakistan bought it for $3 million and it became an official part of Pakistan since then.

After facing many difficulties, it was decided to construct Gwadar Port in two parts:

• Phase 1
• Phase 2

The construction of the three-floor multipurpose building including equipment to control the port and other port-related ground frames in included in Phase 1. The construction of phase 1 began in 2002 and it was accomplished in four year time, in 2006.

Phase 2 is still in progress under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) with the alliance of China. The main focus of this phase is on building a highway, depots, filtration plant, 360 MW coal-fired power plant and much more, which is anticipated to cost $1.02 billion.

Although CPEC has been a helping hand in multiple concerns of Pakistan but their main interest is in the completion of a fully functioning Gwadar Port. The port is expected to control one million tons of cargos by 2017. Most of these cargos will contain construction material for various other CPEC projects.

China Overseas Port Holding Company (COPHC) is planning on turning this port to fulfill the capacity of 400 million tons of cargo per year eventually. For this strategic long term plan to work, Gwadar Port needs a total 100-floor dock build by 2045.
