Hajj gets tech-savy, PITB provides info via SMS

The Pakistan Information Technology Board (PITB) initiative has given Punjab a major technological overhaul to the previously redundant Information Technology (IT) sector, which was almost nonexistent in Pakistan until a few decades ago. PITB’s achievements are commendable at large, but the recent technological convenience provided to the ‘Hujjaj’ via the Hajj Monitoring System, is worth mentioning at this point in time. The Hajj Monitoring System offers a comprehensive complaint registration platform that registers complaints, which are faced by the ‘Hujjaj’ before and during the travel process. The SMS facility would make it convenient for the ‘Hujjaj’  to keep track of developments pertaining to their travel, as they happen or in some cases prior to actual travel.

Previously, the Hajj sector has faced a lot of mismanagement and corruption allegations due to lack of transparency and inefficiency. On average 1.5 million Pakistani pilgrims travel to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) every year to pay tribute while performing their religious obligations. The currently highlighted factor that has come to the attention of the Punjab government, is the lack of information provided to the pilgrims who have been kept in the dark for decades, mostly by travel agents. Mostly pilgrims lack the basic know how of international travel. Let alone other travel requirements, these travellers did not have any awareness pertaining to the law and policy matters, health safety, travel and lodging, and misplaced personal belongings.

The PITB after considering all these numerous problems has developed a complaint centre, which caters to all common queries of travellers. PITB in collaboration with the the Ministry of Religious Affairs developed the Hajj Monitoring System in 2013. The system has been very successful in delivering what it had promised to do during the initial stages. It aided the government in keeping a track record of the data of ‘Hujjaj’ , and has created a database for that during the process of managing the Hajj Monitoring System with the passage of time. This plethora of recorded data has enabled the administration to improve the Hajj experience via client’s feedback in addition to the complaints lodged by them.

PITB’s complaint monitoring cell has state-of-the-art facilities and is capable of  handling multiple issues at the same time. The formation of PITB’s complaint centre in Kingdom of Saudia Arabia (KSA) is one step closer towards making the solution as effectively real as possible. Andriod applications are also there to aid the process.

The services offered by the Hajj Monitoring System as per PITB’s website are as follows:
