Indian Institute of Technology has produced number of technology executives including Google’s CEO

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is an independent public institute which is located in India across 17 different cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai etc. It was established ‘for post war industrial development in India.’

The institute is well-known for its technical fields, particularly computer science, engineering and mathematics. Indian Institute of Technology has produced some prominent Silicon Valley giants over the years and we will present a brief summary of 9 high tech executives who made a significant impact in the respective fields after securing a degree from IIT.

1- Sundar Pichai (CEO of Google)

Pichai Sundararajan, who is also known as Sundar Pichai, is an Indian American business executive. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the first school of IIT which was established in Kharagpur. He is currently serving as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Google.

2- N.R. Narayana Murthy (co-founder of Infosys)

Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy better known as Narayana Murthy secured his master’s degree from IIT Kanpur. He is an Indian IT industrialist and the co-founder of Infosys, a multinational corporation providing business consulting, technology, engineering, and outsourcing services. The global IT outsourcing company was established in 1981 and today it has as many as 194,000 employees.

3- Nikesh Arora (former Google executive)

Nikesh Arora graduated from IIT, Varanasi with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1989. At present, he is the CEO of Sabbatical – Rejuvenating in San Francisco. Prior to his current role, he was the President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of SoftBank. He also played the role of Chief Business Officer at Google.

4- Padmasree Warrior (CEO of U.S. for NextEV)

Padmasree Warrior received her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from IIT, Delhi in 1982. She is currently on the board of directors at Microsoft, Moreover she is also the the U.S. CEO of NextEV, an electric vehicle company. Until 2015, she worked as a chief technology and strategy officer at Cisco. Prior to that, she was the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Motorola.

5- Vinod Khosla (owner of Khosla Ventures)

Vinod Khosla heads his own venture capital firm, Khosla Ventures. He was one of the co-founders of Sun Microsystems, which was acquired by Oracle in 2010. He received a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from IIT, Dehli. Tycoon Vinod Khosla said in an interview to CBS News in 2003:

“The IITs probably are the hardest school in the world to get into, to the best of my knowledge”

6- Dinesh Paliwal (CEO of Harman Intl. Industries)

Dinesh Paliwal got his master’s degree in engineering from IIT, Roorkee which was established in 2001. He is working as a Chairman, President and the CEO of audio and infotainment systems for the automotive, consumer and professional market – Harman International Industries.

7- Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal (co-founders of Flipkart)

Sachin and Binny Bansal are not brothers neither are they related. Both of them attended IIT in Delhi. The pair previously worked for Amazon before launching Flipkart (from an apartment in Bangalore with $6,500 cash), an ecommerce startup in India worth about $15 billion.

8- Arun Sarin (former CEO of Vodafone Group)

Arun Sarin is an Indian born American telecommunications executive. Until 2008, he was the CEO of the telecom giant Vodafone Group. He currently sits on Accenture’s board. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur.

9- Pradeep Sindhu (co-founder of Juniper Networks)

Pradeep Sindhu received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT, Kanpur. He is an entrepreneur who is the co-founder and CTO and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Juniper Networks.
