Ministry of IT and Telecom issues draft of National IT Policy

Due to the ever increasing growth in the trends of Information Technology, the renewal of the National IT policy has become crucial. This renewal is significant as it will stress on transforming the fundamentals of technology and its eco-system centered on digitization. Keeping this in mind, the Ministry of IT and Telecom (MoITT) attempted to create a draft of national IT policy document with advice from relevant stakeholders.

In 2015, an initial draft was prepared with the consultation and supervision of PASHA, IT industry, civil society and related government departments. The draft was then discussed with different government associations, IT experts, digital and internet service providers and other relevant IT specialists in different group sessions and conferences.

Finalization of the draft

After discussing the draft with every related IT department, the MoIT has decided to finalize the draft by arranging a final ‘stakeholders’ consultation’ event. This event will focus on reviewing the draft and making necessary amendments while finalizing it. The event is to be held on 27th October 2016 in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad.

In August 2016, the MoIT created multiple stakeholder workgroups to prepare for the big event. The draft policy was shared with the designated members of the group who reviewed the draft and shared their opinions about it.

The event to be held in October will finalize the draft of the national IT policy and it will aim to create an all-rounded digital ecosystem. The working groups created before the event will emphasize on the main topics such as encouraging revolution and entrepreneurship, increased IT exports, security measures to protect the software industry, promoting e-Commerce environment, infrastructure development, gender equality and the support for people with disabilities so that they can also have access to IT.
