Number of 3G subscribers decreased for the first time in Pakistan, says PTA

For the first time since its launch, the number of 3G subscribers in Pakistan reduced by around 0.2 million. According to the report revealed by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), there is a decline from 29.7 million in May to 29.5 million in June.

However, there has been a significant rise in mobile phone users. The number reached to 133.24 million in June this year from 114.66 million in June 2015. There has been an upsurge of 18.58 million mobile users in just one year.

Mobilink and Ufone observed sharp decline

Two of the biggest telecom operators in Pakistan, Mobilink and Ufone, saw a sharp decline in their 3G subscribers. Mobilink observed a dip of 0.3 million from 9.2 million in May 2016 to 8.9 million in June last month.

As far as Ufone is concerned, their 3G users decreased by 0.1 million. 3G users in May were 5.3 million as compared to 5.2 million in the month of June.

Chairman of PTA, Syed Ismail Shah admitted the dip in 3G subscribers. While talking to Business Recorder, he stated:

“I got it checked. There is a drop [in the number of 3G subscribers]”

However, he did not disclose any information about the potential reasons behind the sharp decrease.

Telenor, Warid and Zong witnessed rise in 3G subscribers

According to PTA report, rest of the three telecom operators observed the following rise in 3G users:

1- Telenor’s 3G users increased from 8.2 million in May to 8.3 million in June
2- Zong’s 3G customers augmented from 5.92 million in May to 5.98 million in June
3- Waird LTE subscribers also jumped from 0.33 million in May to 0.34 million in June

Moreover, Zong also witnessed a rise in their 4G users to 0.68 million in June from 0.63 million in May.

Mobile users in Pakistan

The report also revealed the increase in total mobile phone users in Pakistan. As of June 2016, the standing is at 133.24 million. Mobilink is leading the chart with 39 million users closely followed by Telenor who has 38 million customers. Zong’s user database is 25 million whereas Ufone has as many as 20 million users. Warid is at the bottom of the table with 11 million users.
