Once again, Plan9 – Punjab Information Technology Board’s Tech Incubator, is geared up to dent the entrepreneurial space with its flagship event – The Launchpad.
The Launchpad is Plan9’s bi-annual pitching competition that marks the beginning of its six months long incubation cycle and comprises of training, workshops and talks replicated across three cities of Pakistan – Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.
With a staggering number of three thousand applicants from all across Pakistan and 130 selected startups pitching at the event, The Launchpad is not just a competition but an entity symbolic of the rising entrepreneurial culture in Pakistan.
The Launchpad 11 will be a weeklong event (in Lahore) kicking off with three days of startup trainings and workshops leading into two days of pitching competition from 7th – 11th Feb 2018.
The pitching competition, spread over two days, is further divided into two segments. On Day One, 130 shortlisted startups deliver their two minute-long elevator pitches to an external panel of judges. On the basis of scores, a select group of 25-30 startups is then qualified for Day Two.
On the second day, this group of startups pitch their business models once again, but this time in an elaborate, seven minute long pitch followed by three minutes of Q ’n A. The winning 15 startups get an incubation spot at Plan9.
Plan9 is the pioneer of technology incubation in Pakistan operating along the lines of Silicon Valley helping budding entrepreneurs with tech-product based business ideas to build and grow their startups.
Since its inception in 2012, Plan9 has graduated more than 130 startups in 10 cycles. Its startups are evaluated at more than $70 million, have raised a gross investment of over $3.2 million and created more than 1200 jobs across Pakistan. Plan9 has a number of big international and local partners on board including global giants such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft.
The overwhelming response from entrepreneurs and the mushrooming of incubators throughout the country is a validation big enough that the entrepreneurial seed Plan9 had sown five years ago is now bearing fruits.
Dr. Umar Saif, Chairman Punjab Information Technology Board, sharing his views on the quality of tech startups cropping up in Pakistan, stated:
“Since the inception of Plan9, the quality of startups coming in has only improved with every graduating cycle. The ideas are more refined. The products are more innovative. However, we’re still waiting for that unicorn, million dollar startup that’ll become the face of the tech startup culture in Pakistan. And yours could be that ground-breaking idea.”
