Punjab government develops a website to help recover missing children

Punjab has lately observed an increase in the tragic incidents of disappearance and kidnapping of children. As a result, the Punjab government has launched a website which is aimed at assisting the rescue of missing children.

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has developed a website titled ‘Missing Children Recovery’. The sole purpose of launching this website is to reunite the lost children with their families. The website consists of a database which lists the children who have been recovered by the Punjab government. The recovery is made possible in cooperation with the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau, Punjab.

How does the system work?

The system has been formulated by Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit (law and order) and the Counter-Terrorism Wing. The system will develop online safety programmes for children. Moreover, it will also provide training to volunteers for disseminating information regarding kidnappings.

The system will issue a child kidnapping notification once law-enforcement officials confirm such an incident and if the kidnapping meets their criteria. Later, the law enforcement agencies will inform the state officials and broadcasters about the abduction.

What does database include?

The PITB-developed website includes significant identification information of the children. It comprises of child’s name, child’s father name, child recovery date and number, the district, as well as the city of the recovery. Additionally, the website also indicates the child’s recovery details if there is any other information which is discovered during the recovery.

Furthermore, the website also has the feature of sharing the details of the recovered children on Facebook and Twitter. A recovery helpline of 1121 is also placed on the website which is open for 24 hours.

The initiative has been taken to bring down the disturbing rise in cases of child kidnapping in Punjab. Do you think it’s a positive initiative from Punjab government?
