Special Public Water ATMs To Be Built In Punjab

Punjab would be having the luxury of Water ATMs at many areas very soon. It is actually a water supplying machine which is set up for general public to provide them with fresh water. The new setup is basically aimed to overcome the need of clean water in areas where it is scarce and the available water is dirty and unhealthy.

The Information Technology University (ITU), University of Colorado Boulder (UCB), Pakistan-United States Science and Technology Cooperation Program will collaborate to construct “Design and Implementation of Water ATMs – Water Dispensing and Quality Measurement Units” in Pakistan.

USA’s National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and HEC Pakistan has provided enormous $374,599 for the project. Dr. Tauseef Tauqeer of ITU and Mr. Mustafa Naseem of UCB will manage these funds together to complete the project.

The Government of Punjab is looking forward to build these water filtration plants. These Water ATMs would help the public to contain fresh drinking water for free.

India has also set up various Water ATMs in areas where the availability of clean water is scarce.

Availability of clean water in Pakistan

Even though Pakistan currently has many water filtration plants but they are not duly maintained. Due to the lack of maintenance of these filtration plants, the quality of water is poor, particularly in Punjab. According to the research, most of these filtration plants are not even functioning anymore.

In Pakistan, the need of clean water is daily increasing. Lower than 1000 cubic meters per capita of water has been recorded in the past. What’s more of a challenge is the availability of clean water. Millions of people in Pakistan drink dirty and unhealthy water. Due to this 41,000 children are dying yearly due to diarrhea, dirty water, and hygiene problems.

Advanced solution

This project will develop Water ATMs, a water filtering machine with quality measurement unit. The filtration plant includes technology that identifies pH, turbidity, residual chlorine, and total dissolved solids (TDS). The water and filtering quality will be measured daily, and the information will be gathered in the web-based dashboard through telemetry. Through this process, wastage of water and maintenance problems would be recorded daily and duly resolved.
