The current tech scene in Pakistan can be identified as ‘booming’. Every corner we look, there are numerous IT-related start ups; most Freelancing gigs seem to be related to IT, as well. The larger cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad seem to lead the way in most new initiatives with the rest of the nation lagging behind. But now Gujranwala, better known for wrestlers and great food, wants to add the ‘innovative IT leaders’ tag to its belt too.
Gujranwala 2.0 (G20) seems to imply a second version of Gujranwala — an apt name to describe the IT revolution that’s coming from within the city. Previously, efforts had been made to bring the growing IT professionals and companies together without fruition. In September 2016, after a meet up it was decided to start a formal forum. Forward to December 2016, and Gujranwala 2.0 was formally formed by Asad Ijaz, CEO Green Systems & Aptech Gujranwala, Maavuz Saif, CEO Code Freaks Gujranwala, Salman Bhatta, a US graduate working on non-profit projects and Muhammad Saqib, a fresh CS graduate and budding entrepreneur. Speaking to PakWired, Asad described the vision of G20:
Gujranwala 2.0 strives to rebuild Gujranwala, uplift the tech sector, promote innovation & entrepreneurship. We further wish to empower youth through the collaboration of software houses, freelancers, academia and the industry.
Since its inception, G20 has organised a formal meet up of over 30 companies from the city. More recently, the body organised Gujranwala’s first IT expo as well, which was a great success. Keen to build on this momentum, G20 has now organised the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2017 in Gujranwala.
What is the NASA Space Apps Challenge?
Yes, it is THE NASA. They organise a 48 hour hackathon every year in cities across the world. Just an idea to give you of the scale of things, last year 160 events took place with 15,000 people participating across 6 continents. This year, Gujranwala will be playing its role in trying to solve problems that NASA want to solve.
