E-Challan System Gets Operational In Lahore

Gone are the days when you could bribe a police officer to get away after breaking a certain law while driving. The Government of Punjab has launched the e-challan system in Lahore which is now going to replace the practice of manually recording the challan and its consequent tempering.

This automated system was supposed to be rolled out by the end of July 2017. However, due to some pending work, it got introduced a bit later. This new rule will now enable the drivers of the city to be more cautious about violating any traffic law.

The new e-challan system will levy penalty points on the driver for breaking the traffic law. Following image is a specimen of e-challan receipt:

How does the e-challan system work?

Once an e-challan receipt is generated against a particular driver, it is then delivered at the driver’s registered postal address via Pakistan Post. The charges are Rs50 and the driver is required to pay for the service charges.

Safe City Authority has placed ANPR cameras in the city. As a result, it will help the concerned authorities to identify the law-breakers and penalize them with an e-challan receipt.

Once the driver gets the receipt, he can pay the e-challan either through bank or via Telenor Pakistan’s branchless banking service i.e. Easypaisa.

In addition to e-challan system, the relevant authority is also intending to introduce Rasta mobile application. The idea is to assist the drivers in applying for a driving license. Moreover, it will also help them in paying the challans from their home.

Recently, Safe City Authority presented a proposal to change the number plates of 4 million vehicles in the city. The primary reason behind the proposal was that the cameras were unable to catch the number plates due to rusty, improper condition of the plates. However, Punjab Government has still not given a go-ahead regarding the proposal.
