On Wednesday, the statue of physicit Dr Abdus Salam – Pakistan’s first Nobel Prize winner – has been unveiled at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Headquarters in Vienna.
According to a Foreign Office (FO) handout, the Director General of IAEA, Yukiya Amano unveiled the bust of Dr Abdus Salam.

About the Distinction
It holds plenty of significance to state that the statue of Dr Abdus Salam is positioned alongside some prominent and distinguished figures. Some of the busts at the IAEA headquarters are those of scientists who have left a phenomenal impact on the way the world understands the principles of existence, and have been extremely influential particularly in the promotion of nuclear science and technology.
One of the statements in the Foreign Office handout read:
“Dr Salam, Pakistan’s first Nobel Laureate, was an ardent proponent of broadening the base of scientific knowledge in the developing world and an advocate of ‘Atoms for Peace’”
In addition, the statement read:
“Dr Salam’s efforts in making the world aware of the benefits of using nuclear knowledge for peace, health and prosperity have been recognised on numerous occasions. He was also the founder of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy”

About Dr Abdus Salam
In addition to his countless academic and scientific achievements, Dr Salam has been fondly recognized all across the globe as the advocate for the cause of improving life conditions for the young students coming from the developing countries. At the ICTP, Trieste, which he developed, he instituted the famous “Associateships” which allowed deserving young physicists to spend their vacations there and find means and inspiration to develop their ideas and further their scientific pursuits.
Dr Abdus Salam was honored with a Nobel Prize back in 1979 at Stockholm, Sweden for his ground breaking work in the field of Physics.
