Pakistan’s First Digital University: ITU and edX to Provide Free Online Courses from World’s Top Universities

Information Technology University (ITU) and edX have collaborated with each other to provide free online courses from world’s best universities to plenty of students who can benefit from hundreds of courses which will be offered online.

Founded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, edX is a non-profit institute which is intended to offer high quality and top-notch education.

The Chairman of Punjab IT Board, Dr. Umar Saif stated that ITU will integrate edX MicroMasters into master degree programs in Data Sciences and Development Economics from the next year. He revealed this at the time of signing ceremony. at the occasion of signing the MoU, he expressed:

“The collaboration with edX will allow Pakistani students to take courses from top universities in the world in their classrooms at ITU; under the supervision of the ITU faculty members”

edX Partners With a Pakistani University For The First Time

It is extremely significant to state that edX has collaborated with any Pakistani University for the first time ever. The affiliation between ITU and edX will enable the former educational institute to integrate edX courses into the classrooms. Moreover, it will also empower ITU to supervise the exams.

The MOU between the two has been signed by Dr. Umar Saif, Vice Chancellor ITU and Dr. Anant Agarwal, Professor at MIT and CEO of edX. As per the official statement released at the event, the collaboration between ITU and edX will result in the formation of the “first digital university” in Pakistan.

The association between ITU and edX means that there are now three edX centers across the world; Barcelona (Spain), Beijing (China) and Lahore (Pakistan).

Opportunity For Students to Study For Free

Under this joint venture, the students will be at liberty to study from the top international universities and non-profit organizations without any cost. Moreover, a student would be able to take hundreds of courses and can secure certifications from several renowned universities across the world.

Through this partnership, ITU will also move ahead toward creating a digital university for its students. ITU also partnered with the U.S. Consulate General Lahore in January 2017 to set up the first Lincoln Corner in Lahore. The collaboration offers a wide collection of opportunities for learning.
