Arooj Aftab Creates History; Becomes First Pakistani To Win Grammy

On Sunday, a Brooklyn-based Pakistani singer, Arooj Aftab brought laurels when she became the first Pakistani ever to win Grammy. The award ceremony took place in Las Vegas. The young prodigy from the ‘land of pure’ secured the award in the Best Global Performance category for her song ‘Mohabbat’.

While celebrating her Grammy award, Arooj Aftab exhibited her excitement by stating:

“I am beyond thrilled. It feels great. I’ve been very nervous all day. Oh my gosh. I am so proud of this moment personally, but also for the industry itself. Tonight we celebrated music as a collective, unapologetically making what we want to make, in all its genre-less, limitless crossover glory. Thank you AND congratulations”

About Arooj Aftab

Arooj spent her childhood in Lahore, Pakistan. However, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 2005 to get herself enrolled in Berklee College of Music in music production and engineering.

The bright student from Pakistan has now been living in New York for over a decade now. Through her outclass work, Arooj has been gaining attention from all parts of the world. She shines in various musical styles and idioms including jazz, minimalism and neo-Sufi.

One of the greatest aspirations of her career is that the former US President Barrack Obama included the track ‘Mohabbat’ on his favorites list.

Arooj has been a star performer for both Pakistan and the US. She has performed at a number of major venues including Lincoln Center, the Andy Warhol Museum and Museum of Modern Art. Moreover, she also performed at quite a few big festivals inclusive of The Big Ears Festival, The Ecstatic Music Festival and The San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Pakistani actors are celebrating Arooj’s Grammy win

From Shireen Mazari to Ali Zafar, most of the Pakistani actors are relishing Pakistan’s maiden Grammy win which Arooj Aftab managed to secure for the country.

Star actor Adnan Siddiqui tweeted:

“Arooj’s achievement is wonderful news for the industry. The entire world is recognising our country’s talent. Congratulations. Proud moment for all Pakistanis”

Legendary singer Hadiqa Kiani also showered praise for Arooj by tweeting:

“In this chaotic world, I’m very happy to wake up to the most beautiful news. Arooj has won her first Grammy. So proud of you. Keep making us proud you rock star”

This is probably just the beginning of good things to come for the talented singer. Likewise, Arooj will be performing at Coachella, a music festival in California this month from 15th till 24th April.
