Power Crisis: Are Smart Meters What Pakistan Needs?

Smart meters have been in use internationally for the last 10 years. Countries all over the world have implemented these systems for a safe and easy experience between suppliers and consumers of both the services: gas and electricity.

The execution of smart meters is still not implemented in Pakistan despite its endless capabilities. Other countries have already adapted to this technology due to its benefits. By 2020, Britain aims to install these smart meters in all of its homes. So, the question is; when will Pakistan follow the suit?

At the outset, the masses need to know what are smart meters and how are they beneficial to us.

What are smart meters?

Smart meters are a digital version of gas/electricity meters. Instead of using an analog meter to calculate usage statistics, a digital meter is used. This meter transmits the data to the supplier without the need of a person to come and note down those readings.

Digital meters cannot be tampered with. Moreover, automatic transmission of readings ensures the accuracy of utility bills. Due to these benefits, smart meters are being used all around the world.

How do they operate?

Smart meters have a centralized system. Through this system, usage statistics and readings are sent to the supplier automatically. The transmission of this data is conducted wireless. Moreover, connection and disconnection of meters can be done through this system without the use of any physical work such as cutting wires or removing the meter altogether.

The system doesn’t provide a way to alter the readings from both sides. Hence, accuracy of consumption readings is guaranteed.

A home display is also delivered along with the smart meter which gives a real time display of usage in kilowatts along with the cost of it. Peak usage factors are also displayed on it which helps consumers opt for cost efficient plans.

Benefits

No more estimated bills

Consumers won’t have to provide their previous readings in case of any disruptions in the service. Through the automatic transmission of readings, the need of a reader will be eliminated.

Cost effective planning

Consumers will be able to make cost effective consumption plans by observing their energy usage.

Quick services

Smart meters have the ability to detect power outages quickly and an alert is sent to the supplier immediately. With this mechanism, problems can be identified faster and repair crews can be sent on time.

Reduced bills

Consumers can keep track of their usage on a day to day basis which will help them identify which appliances consume the most power. This in turn, will help reduce the electricity bill by a significant amount by making respective plans.

The accuracy of data on the customer and supplier’s end will ensure a better understanding of the billing process. This way, demand-side management programs can also be implemented such as users turning off heavy appliances for a limited time in peak hours in return for a reduced electricity bill.

Smart meter technology can bring wonders to Pakistan as the country is already sinking in issues regarding illegal power connections and tampering of reading units. The implementation of smart meters will reduce electricity usage, improve services related to power outage, manage recoveries, and enhance distribution planning capabilities.
